The Biggest Decision So Far. Why we’ve chosen to settle in Portugal (through golden visa)
Traveling in EuropeWe were living in our van for almost two years before moving into a house in Lisbon. We had no idea what was going to happen next, but we knew that we wanted to continue traveling and exploring Europe together.
After spending nearly three years traveling around Europe, we decided to settle down in Portugal. Our decision came after much consideration and research, and we’re happy that we chose to settle here.
But first, here’s why we love Portugal:
- Beautiful beaches
- Amazing food
- Friendly locals
- Affordable housing
- Easy access to other European countries
- Good weather
- Low cost of living
- Great healthcare system
Moving to Portugal: now what?
We started by researching other expat bloggers who had moved to Portugal.
Then we interviewed several friends and family members who were either currently living in Portugal or had recently returned after living abroad.
Finally, we spoke directly with immigration lawyers and real estate agents to learn more about the process of moving to Portugal. I can’t stress enough this last point, because they now all the bits and bobs of the program and can make it hassle free in the end. But more on that in the next paragraphs.
Golden Visa? What’s that? “Better call Saul”
I still remember the day I decided to apply for a Golden Visa. It was after all of those consultations that I’ve just mentioned, that in the end we decided to ask for the help of a portuguese specialist in the program. In this case, he is called Saul (yes, exactly as that one , but with an accent on the “u”, portuguese style) and was mentioned to us by our real estate agent. After having our golden visa portugal lawyer hired, the rest was actually easy.
It took me almost two months to complete the application process, but I finally got approved. Now, I’m living in Portugal and loving every minute of it.
So, what exactly does a Golden Visa entail? Well, it’s basically a special type of residence permit that allows foreigners who invest into Portuguese real estate or funds to become permanent residents.
This means that if you decide to buy property in Portugal, you could potentially qualify for citizenship. You would receive a residency card that gives you the same rights as other citizens. For example, you can vote, run for office, and own property.
There are several benefits to becoming a resident of Portugal.
- First, you can travel freely within Europe.
- Second, you can open bank accounts and set up business operations.
- Third, you can bring your spouse and children along with you.
- Fourth, you can obtain a job in Portugal.
- Fifth, you can purchase health insurance.
- Sixth, you can enroll your kids in schools.
- Seventh, you can claim tax breaks.
- Eighth, you can enjoy free education.
Of course, there are downsides too. For starters, you must meet specific requirements.
In addition, you must pass a background check and provide proof of financial stability.
All in all, I think it’s worth applying for a Golden Visa. It’s a fantastic opportunity to experience a different culture while doing something positive for yourself and others. Plus, you can save thousands of dollars in taxes each year.
Are we staying here for long?
We decided to settle down in Portugal after spending over 2 months researching different countries. We wanted to find somewhere where our family could enjoy life together while still having access to the world.
Portugal was the perfect fit for us. Not only does it offer beautiful beaches and amazing food, but it also offers a low cost of living and a welcoming culture. Our kids love going to school and playing sports every day. And since we’re located near Lisbon, we can visit other parts of Europe whenever we feel like it.
But the biggest reason we chose Portugal is that we felt like we were home. There’s no place else we would rather be. And feeling like that, is difficult to think of any other place to live in the next 5 to 10 years.
