Norm's Computer and Cell Phone Tips
1. February 2006
Many people are tapping into wireless hotspots around the country, for me I find a free site to jump on about 50% of the time. However for all financial transactions I still use my cell phone as a modem, presently Verizon. It’s possible to purchase an antenna for you cell phone for $30 to $45. The following link will get you to a site where you can purchase an antenna, accessorygeeks.com . These antennas can be purchased with a cable specific to your phone.2. March 2006
It appears that cell phone numbers will be released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls.
You can prevent sales calls by calling the national DO NOT CALL list at the following number from your cell phone: 888/382-1222.3. September 2006
I have mentioned the following tip before but a couple of people at the rally asked me about our cell phone antenna since it just arrived.
We have used a Verizon cellphone for calls and as a modem for our laptop for the last 5 years of our travel, particularly when I can’t find a wireless network to jump on.
Even when we can connect to a wireless network, we use the cellphone modem for all financial transactions. We are generally able to get a Verizon signal almost everywhere in the lower 48 and parts of Alaska, though sometimes it’s a rather weak signal
To improve this situation we have purchased an external antenna to increase the signal strength. It simply mounts to the roof of the Bounder or the car with a rather strong magnet. The cord from the antenna can be passed through the rubber seals of the door without damage and plugged into the back of your cell phone. If you purchase an antenna you have to let the antenna company know your phone model number. It turns out that the antenna almost doubles the signal strength.
In addition to magnet mounts they offer a number of additional configurations. http://www.accessorygeeks.com. The model we choose cost $42.
